President-elect Obama has apparently pegged CNN/CBS correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta to be the next Surgeon General.

This pick, in addition to being somewhat of a surprise, is interesting in relation to Obama’s campaign plans for nationalized health care. Some may recall this exchange between Gupta and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore over Moore’s documentary Sicko:

Will the Gupta choice be reflected in any substantive policy angle? I’m not so sure. But Gupta (who I happen to agree with on the veracity of Moore’s interchangeable use of spending figures) is definitely, at the very least, skeptical on the implied government spending involved in the maintenance of a fully nationalized health care system.

Will Gupta be in Obama’s ear?

UPDATE: Ezra Klein makes a solid case for Gupta.
